I was just asked for the second time in the past week if we were going to “try for a boy.”
These questions never bother me, but possible answers sure are fun to ponder. As the proud father of two beautiful girls, I could not be happier right now in this moment. I love being a dad and love having daughters. Of course it helps that I am married to a loving, supportive wife (that happens to be the best mom in the land!) I do not know what it is like to have a son but I am okay with that. I feel no need to “try” for a boy or attempt to plan anything along these lines.
Maybe I only make girls
Edit: Maybe God only blesses me with girls. Maybe two is enough. Or 19?
Jes just wrote in her previous post entitled Peace. that the Lord “gives peace in great abundance to those who are content with what He has given.” Obviously that applies here.
We go back and forth on the topic. If it was up to us, Jes and I have discussed how many feels right. The world would warn about the costs of raising so many kids. So many mouths to feed. And don’t even think about college costs! But we know God has His plan for our life and if He wants us to have more children then He will provide. And again we are reminded that children are blessings from God. Cue Bible verse:
Psalms 127: 3-5
3 Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord,
the fruit of the womb a reward.
4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior
are the children of one’s youth.
5 Blessed is the man
who fills his quiver with them!
Thinking about adoption
Now, we have not done too much along this line of thinking, but the thought does cross my mind. I think of it more these days because we have several close friends that have thought about adopting and another couple this is currently going thru the process. I’m not sure of how it all works, I know they have taken some classes and filled out some paperwork and are, in their words, paper pregnant.
This lovely couple is Steve and Katie Day. You may not know them, but if you would like to follow their adventures (or even send a small donation their way), I know they would love to have you. Check out their blog With Love… And don’t be afraid to comment and encourage. You can tell ‘em I sent you.
If and when we think God is calling us to have more children, we know He works in His own ways. And when it comes to having children, adoption is a viable choice.
But for now…
So happy together
Jes and I will not “try” nor will we prevent. We will enjoy each day as it arrives. We don’t have the minivan (yet) or white picket fence but we are living the dream on our homestead, loving every minute as a happy family of four with two dogs and three dozen free-ranging chickens.

Love this post and hearing on this subject. Also, you can often adopt from foster care for free. Could be an option to have it all!
Thanks for the comment, Andrea. Something to keep in mind, for sure!
